Food Distribution
Food distribution volunteering in the Ruskeasuo neighbourhood of Helsinki, organised by IYC Suomi, a youth-led NGO that encourages young people to “live for others”. As a volunteer you join a small team that delivers food bags to families in need who live in the area, turning a couple of hours of your time into very concrete support.
We meet at a residential building in Ruskeasuo, where you receive a short briefing about the route, practicalities and how to approach the families in a respectful way. Then we follow a route plan and deliver the bags door-to-door. The tasks include carrying food bags, using the lift or stairs, ringing doorbells and greeting people briefly at the door.
You do not need previous experience – a positive attitude, reliability and respect for the residents are the most important things. You can manage in English or Finnish; many volunteers also speak other languages. Activities usually take place on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings. You can join occasionally or more regularly, depending on your schedule. After you register, we will send you the exact address, instructions about the entrance (via the car access and glass door) and all practical information you need to feel ready for the volunteering activity.
